Jubilation, an exhibit of photography by Dr. Lou Outlaw

It was a day Lou Outlaw will never forget: Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009. He sat quietly perched behind his camera, taking pictures of people in the crowd, when this image came to focus in his lens. Jubilation captures the story that culminates the intense joy and emotion of that historical day as Obama took the oath of office.

In 2000, Lou Outlaw joined the faculty of Vanderbilt University’s College of Arts and Science as professor of philosophy and director of the African American Studies program.

“My hope for these images is that they will be monuments to this great moment in American history. This is not something the founders planned or hoped for. That is the truth we have to tell.”
