Publisher’s Note | May 2012

Why is it that whenever there are budget cuts in our educational system it is usually the arts programs that are the first to go? Yet studies continually show that students exposed to the arts will often score higher in all subjects and will more likely continue their education to college and beyond. The arts also provide disadvantaged students with the creative outlet to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. So why do we not put a higher emphasis on keeping the arts alive and vibrant in our schools? It’s very puzzling.

With this issue we are thrilled, and I do mean genuinely thrilled, to launch ArtSmart, a monthly guide to art education that will spotlight the many outstanding programs and teachers who are often creating art miracles with very little resources. You will find ArtSmart on pages 58 through 61. Many thanks to FirstBank and the Ayers Foundation for their continued support of the arts and the ArtSmart initiative. Also a sincere thanks to the TPAC educational ArtSmart program for sharing their name with us.

According to 60 Minutes on CBS, the world has gone art crazy. A recent report highlighted the sometimes-outrageous amounts paid for modern and contemporary art and the artists who are experiencing meteoric prices for their work. On our cover, Picasso’s Femme assise dans un fauteuil goes on the block at Sotheby’s this month with a guide estimate of $30 million. We’ll keep you posted on the hammer price. And wouldn’t it be wonderful if just a little bit of that went back into art education. Fingers crossed!
