MARTHA SCHWARTZ PAINTINGS AT CONNECTIONS GALLERY
The paintings of Martha Schwartz reflect a lifetime devoted to art and herbs. An exhibit of her canvases will be exhibited at the Connections Gallery 3 June through 30 August, 2012.
“Painting feeds my soul”, says Schwartz, “I have reached the point in my life where I can focus on my art.”
Schwartz’s roots in botany go back to the Sassafras Shop at Belle Meade Mansion which she opened with a partner in 1976. For 10 years, she gave classes, sold herb plants, and produced cooking herb blends which were wholesaled and retailed over the southeast. After selling the shop she joined the staff of Cheekwood Botanical Garden.
Her talent for painting surfaced when she designed the Sassafras mail-order catalogues. She is a past president of the Calligrapher’s Guild and a past member of the Herb Society. Her residential herb garden was featured in Southern Living Magazine and appears twice in Southern Living’s Growing Herbs in the South.
Connections Gallery is part of The Arts at Belle Meade United Methodist Church program. The mission of the gallery is “Connecting people with God, each other, and the world through art.”
Artists of all denominations and backgrounds are invited to submit work for consideration. The gallery is dedicated to showing a wide range of mediums and subject matter. All objects are two dimensional and range from works on paper to canvases to bas relief sculpture. The gallery strives to provide a broad variety of subject matter from abstract to naturalistic. Ten percent of all sales are donated to the church.
Elizabeth Worrell Braswell will exhibit her watercolor paintings from September through November 2012.
Connections Gallery is a community-wide art gallery that is open to the public. The gallery is located in the administrative wing of Belle Meade United Methodist Church. The gallery is open during business hours.
