Kristin Porter to perform at Nashville Jazz Workshop
Vocalist makes Contemporary Series Debut

AUGUST 24, 2010 (Nashville, Tenn.) – The Nashville Jazz Workshop’s exciting new Contemporary Jazz Series continues Sunday, September 5 with vocalist Kristin Porter. The monthly series showcases local contemporary jazz artists. Audiences have the chance to hear cutting-edge jazz in the world-class performance space at the Jazz Cave

Hailing from Springfield, MO, Kristin Porter is quickly building a devoted audience in Nashville. With the release of her new CD, “By the Light of the Moon,” she will quickly win the hearts of all who listen. Seductive vocal styling, coupled with vocal control and power are the key ingredients to this newcomer’s success.

Kristin grew up listening to American soul and R&B. She began her musical career at a young age, singing in church, which broadened her musical ability and solidified her love for making music. With several years of intensive jazz vocal study at the Nashville Jazz Workshop, she gained a solid grasp of the jazz repertoire and tradition. Fusing all these influences with original songwriting, Kristin delivers a fresh and engaging performance. This Contemporary Series appearance will feature material from Kristin’s new CD along with jazz standards and a few Brazilian classics thrown in. Get set for a delightful evening!

There will be two sets beginning at 7:30 pm in the Jazz Cave at the Workshop. Tickets are $10, available at the door. For more information visit www.nashvillejazz.org.

The Nashville Jazz Workshop is located in the Neuhoff Complex at the end of Monroe Street in East Germantown. See the website for directions: www.nashvillejazz.org/MapDirections.html

About the Contemporary Jazz Series: According to NJW Directors Lori Mechem and Roger Spencer, the series is designed to present new, original, and cutting edge jazz that may not have been heard before in the Jazz Cave. Many of these groups appear in local clubs, but can now be heard in the world-class performance space of the Cave. Describing “contemporary jazz,” series host Rahsaan Barber explained that “just as the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie was influenced by musicians’ and audiences’ affinities for the blues of Beale Street and the bright lights of Broadway, so it is with contemporary jazz, which draws much influence from more modern strains of American music — including funk, gospel, hip hop — and more international ‘cargo,’ including Indian ragas, Cuban descargas and European classical music.”
