This month we are excited to showcase several young, amazingly talented artists who are shaking things up on the national scene. The powerful fashion photography of Drew Doggett and the groundbreaking hit songs of the Civil Wars are continuing proof that right here, right now, Nashville is one of the most creative places on Earth.
Two local painters fill our pages with their canvases. On page 60 experience the vibrant plein-air paintings by Anne Blair Brown, an artist who takes us outdoors for a breath of fresh air to capture her scenes from life. And on page 36, immerse yourself in the world of Julia Martin who paints from memory and has created a style well known among the local arts community.
Also, this month we’re announcing our second Photography Competition open to all photographers. Please see the details for entry on page 24.
It’s the season of outdoor festivals and fantastic entertainment. With so many events to choose from—the Nashville Film Festival, Nashville’s Fashion Week, and Art with the Parks—our calendars can be filled with great art events every weekend.
We would also like to say Happy Birthday to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts as they celebrate ten years of stellar art exhibitions, education, and enrichment programs with a weekend of free admission April 8–9. We congratulate the Frist Center on this milestone year.
Our thoughts are with the people of Japan as they struggle through this incredibly difficult time. Please be sure to visit The Dolls of Japan exhibit, a celebration of Japanese culture sponsored by the Japanese Consulate of Tennessee, on view at the Tennessee Art League. You can read a full feature on The Dolls of Japan in our February 2011 issue.
We encourage you to write to us about your events and experiences in the arts this month. Our lines are always open!
