John & June Cash by Alan Messer

Seven in the morning, back in 1987. Johnny Cash stood curbside at the Nashville airport, wearing a long black coat and holding a newspaper under his arm. Alan Messer, photographer, walked towards the legendary singer of songs. Messer would be taking photographs of Cash on a trip to Florida.

“Shoot me any which way you want, but never when I’m pickin’ my nose and never in a limo,” said Cash.

Messer, one of the world’s top music photographers, abhors restrictions, but in this case appreciated the country music legend’s humor and honesty.
