Nashville hosts inaugural As I Age wall

On October 18, 2014, Nashville became home to a very special new interactive art installation: the As I Age wall. The 40-foot-long-by-8-foot high wall, which was placed in Music City Walk of Fame Park from October 18-25, is an adaptation of the popular Before I Die installations by artist Candy Chang. More than 500 Before I Die walls have been installed in more than 70 countries, summoning a mix of tears, hearty laughter and genuine internal reflection among people of all ages worldwide. By having individuals complete the sentence, “Before I die I want to…” the walls have helped motivate people to live the lives they are meant to live each and every day.

The As I Age wall will serve a similar, inspirational purpose. The community engagement project is designed to spark a discussion around what different generations of people think about the process of growing older and allow people to express how they hope their lives will evolve as they age. Having the diverse perspective of people throughout Middle Tennessee will provide a window into perceptions of age and aging across our region.

Any passerby may participate in the project by picking up a piece of chalk at the wall and completing the sentence “As I age …” Those not able to make it to downtown Nashville to write on the wall can contribute to it virtually on their favorite social media platforms using #AsIAge.

The As I Age project is being held in conjunction with the annual meeting of LeadingAge, a national association of more than 6,000 not-for-profit long-term care providers. It has been sponsored by Nashville-based HealthStream.
